The Defense Ministry announced on Tuesday the completion of the upgrading of the security fence along the border with Egypt.

The height of the fence was raised from 15 feet to 24 feet along a 12-mile stretch of territory, in order to further discourage illegal infiltrators and terrorists from entering Israel from Egypt. At the same time, technological improvements were made, such as the installation of additional electronic sensors to detect illegal entry.

The Defense Ministry said that the numbers of infiltrators have come down dramatically as a result of the border fence. In 2015, for example, 213 infiltrators were arrested by the IDF as they entered from Sinai. By comparison, only 11 people succeeded in crossing the Egyptian-Israeli border in 2016.
