Man Warming by Stove Dies After Clothes Catch Fire
EAST ORANGE, N.J. – A man warming himself by the stove died on Sunday after his clothes caught fire and the blaze spread to the rest of the house, The Associated Press reported. Kouadio Loboue, 64, had been sitting in a walker in his home.
Woman Crashes Minivan Into Southern New Jersey Home
PLEASANTVILLE, N.J. – A woman attempting to maneuver into a parking space accidentally hit reverse, sending her van speeding into the dining room of a townhouse Sunday night, The Associated Press reported. The first floor was decimating but the entire family was on the second floor at the time.
Judge Tosses Murder Conviction Over Juror Remark
ROCHESTER – Prejudicial remarks made by a juror to other members of the panel led to the dismissal Thursday of a murder conviction, the Democrat and Chronicle reported. Another juror told the judge about the comments. Jalen Everett, 21, had been convicted in the fatal shooting of three people.
Girl, 12, Killed in Adirondacks Snowmobile Accident
LAKE CLEAR, N.Y. – A 12-year-old girl died Saturday after the snowmobile she was driving struck a pickup truck and caromed into a tree at her family’s home in the Adirondack Mountains, The Associated Press reported. Harlie Rascoe was with 12-year-old Christina Harvey, who remains in critical condition.
Winter Storm Wreaks Havoc on Central NY School Districts
ALBANY – A winter storm Monday sent school districts across central New York scrambling, The Associated Press reported. Scores of school delays were reported early Monday and at least seven district took a snow day and closed.
Feds: Long Island Center in Violation of Federal Law
DIX HILLS, N.Y. – The Federal Highway Administration declared a new $20 million rest stop along the Long Island Expressway in violation of a law which allows vending machines at rest stops but bans over-the-counter sales, Newsday reported. New York officials say the welcome center supports tourism and isn’t a commercial facility.
