Grounded Whale Off the Coast of Long Island Remains Stuck

EAST MORICHES, N.Y. (AP) —

Officials say attempts to free a large, 25-foot humpback whale that has become grounded on a sandbar off the coast of Long Island have been unsuccessful.

The whale, which is estimated to weigh between 15 and 20 tons, got stuck in Moriches Bay over the weekend.

Officials believe the whale is the same humpback that was spotted in the bay off East Moriches more than a week ago.

The mammal is considered to be very dangerous due to its size and “current stressed condition.” The Riverhead Foundation of Marine Research and Preservation has warned the public to maintain a safe distance.

Riverhead Foundation biologists tried creating waves in an effort to move the whale but ultimately failed.

The foundation is consulting with NOAA Fisheries to determine the best course of action.
