NEW YORK (AP) -

Authorities are investigating the cause of a fire that damaged several homes on Staten Island and injured 23 people, including 20 firefighters.

Fire department officials say the blaze was reported just after 6 p.m. Thursday in a three-story house on Benzinger Avenue. The fire then spread to two adjacent houses. Two of the three houses were destroyed. The blaze also caused damage to four other nearby homes.

FDNY officials say about 250 firefighters battled the intense blaze until they got it under control around 9 p.m.

Officials say one civilian is in serious but stable condition, while all the other injuries were minor.

The Red Cross says it’s helping at least 42 people displaced by the fire.
