Six Rescued After Boat Hits N.Y. Break Wall; Operator Charged

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) —

Authorities say the operator of a power boat that hit a break wall in Buffalo Harbor has been charged with boating while intoxicated.

Officials say the crash happened around 12:30 a.m. Friday in the Outer Harbor channel. Crews from the nearby U.S. Coast Guard station on the city’s Lake Erie waterfront rescued five adults from the 17-foot boat.

The Coast Guard went back out to search the area after they learned a sixth person was missing. Officials say the man was found sitting on the break wall.

Officials say everyone on the boat was injured, including two who suffered serious head injuries. Five were treated at a Buffalo hospital.

The Coast Guard says the boat towed to shore by a salvage company.

The Erie County Sheriff’s Office says the 21-year-old man operating the boat has been charged with BWI.
