NY Lawmaker Asks State for Emergency Funds for Sewage Spill
A New York lawmaker is requesting emergency state funding to help the city of Amsterdam repair its aging sewer system after hundreds of thousands of gallons of sewage spilled into the Mohawk River twice in a month.
Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara, a Rotterdam Democrat, is seeking around $100,000 for immediate repairs. A long-term solution is expected to cost another several hundred thousand dollars.
The state Department of Environmental Conservation says the latest spill occurred when a pipe broke Monday morning. The rupture sent more than 300,000 gallons of untreated sewage into a creek that flows into the river 30 miles northwest of Albany.
The spill came two weeks after more than 500,000 gallons of partially treated sewage spilled into the river because of an equipment failure at a city pump station.
