Kayaker, Out Night Fishing, Is Rescued Off Long Island
Police say a kayaker whose craft sank while he was out night fishing was rescued in Long Island Sound.
Suffolk County police say they were alerted to a person calling for help off Old Field around 10:15 p.m. Friday. Old Field is a village near Port Jefferson.
With a police helicopter illuminating the water, Officers John Roy and Matthew Merced spotted the man swimming about 100 feet offshore. It was too rocky for boats to approach him, so Roy went into the water.
He reached the kayaker and swam back to shore with him, with help from Merced. The man was uninjured.
He told police his kayak had started taking on water and eventually went under. He didn’t have a life jacket or cell phone with him.
