IDF Soldier Drowns in South
An IDF soldier drowned on Wednesday in a water reservoir in southern Israel where he had entered for a swim.
The soldier was identified as Cpl. Ilan Yankelevich, z”l, from Netanya.
The soldier’s family was informed of his death and the IDF opened an investigation in addition to the police investigating the incident.
Yankelovich was participating in military exercises in the Gaza border area. A few minutes after he went into the water, his fellow soldiers heard his shouts for help. However, they thought he was kidding them, and did not immediately respond. By the time they realized his distress call was real and they arrived at the reservoir, it was too late.
