Six residents of central Israel are under arrest after being accused of stealing hundreds of gas “balloons,” the canisters that are placed outside homes that supply cooking gas to many Israeli homes. The six were arrested after a lengthy police investigation in which they gathered evidence against the defendants, after receiving hundreds of complaints.
The suspects stole hundreds of canisters, cutting off the hoses that hooked them to the gas connections of apartments in dozens of buildings. The hoses were left open, leaking gas that was already inside the system and creating a major fire hazard. The canisters were then resold by the thieves.
Over 500 canisters were found at three locations, police said.
