Indian Point 2 Shut Down Due to Leaking Pipe

BUCHANAN, N.Y. (AP) —

An Indian Point nuclear reactor that was shut down in March for three months has been taken offline due to a leaking water pipe.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo called the leak at Indian Point 2 “further proof that the plant is not a reliable generation resource.”

The Journal News reports the plant’s owner, Entergy, says the leak came from a pipe in a “non-radioactive system,” and there is no threat to safety.

Entergy spokesman Jerry Nappi said the plant was one of the most reliable in the state.

Indian Point 2 was shut down in March after the Nuclear Regulatory Commission discovered damaged or cracked bolts during an inspection.

The Hudson River Sloop Clearwater environmental group wants federal officials to hold hearings on the safety of the reactor.
