New Jersey Roads, Bridges Get ‘D-Plus’ in Engineer Group’s Report
New Jersey’s infrastructure has received a ‘D-plus’ grade from an engineers’ group.
The American Society of Civil Engineers’ report released Thursday says 42 percent of the state’s roadways are deficient, and roughly one in 11 bridges need significant rehabilitation or replacement.
The group’s last report in 2007 gave New Jersey a ‘C-minus’ grade.
Thursday’s report gave New Jersey residents high marks for recycling. It said residents create almost three times as much waste per person than the national average, but that their recycling rates are among the highest in the nation.
The report comes as lawmakers debate how to prop up the state’s soon-to-be-depleted Transportation Trust Fund. The fund loses its borrowing authorization after June 30 and officials have said it will run out of money by early August.
