Bill to Automatically Register Residents to Vote Advances
New Jersey residents would be automatically registered to vote when they apply or renew a driver’s license under a measure advancing in the Legislature.
The measure was approved by a state Senate panel on Thursday after it was approved by the Assembly last month. The Democratic sponsors of the measure say it could help boost voter registration and turnout.
It would require the state’s Motor Vehicle Commission to automatically register or update a voter’s registration when they get a new or updated license unless they decline.
Drivers are now offered the opportunity to register at the MVC.
