NY Assembly Votes to Create Utility Consumer Advocate

ALBANY (AP) —

Utility consumers in New York would have a new voice representing their interests under legislation passed Wednesday in the state Assembly that would create a state Utility Consumer Advocate.

The advocate would speak up for consumers when energy and other utility companies seek to raise rates or change the level of service. The office would also represent consumers in state and federal courts.

Supporters say states that already have similar advocacy offices have seen big savings in utility bills.
