Lawyers Seek Probation for Ex-NY State Senate Leader, Son

NEW YORK (AP/Hamodia) -

Citing the former State Senate leader’s long history of public service, attorneys for New York’s former Senate leader and his son asked that they be spared a prison term and instead be sentenced to probation and more than 4,000 hours of community service.

The two are scheduled for sentencing next month after they were convicted on charges that the elder Skelos had pressured three companies with a stake in state legislation into giving work to his only child.

During the trial, the defense had argued that the evidence showed only that Dean Skelos was looking out for his son like any loving father, and that prosecutors offered no evidence proving Skelos changed long-standing positions on legislation so he could reward the businesses that employed his son.
