Prosecutor Finds No Crime in Jail Death on Mom of 8
Mount Vernon’s police department bore no “criminal culpability” in the 2015 death while in custody of a mother of eight, New York’s top prosecutor said Thursday.
The probe into the death of Raynette Turner, 42, marked the first time Attorney General Eric Schneiderman undertook an investigation into a fatal police encounter since Gov. Andrew Cuomo gave him authority.
Relatives had disputed an autopsy that found Turner died from an enlarged heart. She was arrested on a Saturday for stealing. Awaiting a Monday arraignment, she was hospitalized for high blood pressure and returned to her cell after a few hours. She was found dead on Monday.
