Huge New Jersey Fire That Burned for 20 Hours Is Contained
Firefighters have contained a massive warehouse fire in central New Jersey that burned out of control for nearly 20 hours and generated enough smoke to be detected by weather radar and force some school closures.
Officials said Friday morning that the blaze didn’t pose an imminent public health threat. It started at around 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Veterans Industrial Park.
Schools are closed Friday in Hillsborough because of the blaze.
Fire officials say plastic pellets were being stored in most of the complex, and environmental officials have been testing air quality.
The 300,000-square-foot complex once housed old military munitions and is near historic Duke Farms. The estate that belonged to the late tobacco heiress Doris Duke has not been damaged.
A firefighter had a minor leg injury.
