Motorists in New York City will be able to pay for metered parking via a smartphone app by the end of the year.

Mayor Bill de Blasio is expected to make the announcement in his State of the City address on Thursday.

The Daily News says drivers will be able to sign up with their credit card and license plate number on the app and then punch in the muni meter number to pay.

The app also will warn motorists when the meter is about to expire.

Transportation Department Commissioner Polly Trottenberg says drivers who don’t use all the time they’ve paid for will receive a refund for the difference.

The city has already tested this technology on 321 parking spaces in the Belmont section of the Bronx.
