Fifth Jailbreak Leads to Suspension of 2 NYPD Officers

NEW YORK (AP) —

Two NYPD officers on Friday were suspended for a month after a prisoner in their custody escaped.

The escape Thursday night was the fifth in the city since June, and Police Commissioner William Bratton said that it won’t be tolerated.

Officers Leoncio Montezuma and Ruben Salce-Aleman were taking Barry Tune, 20, back to the precinct in lower Manhattan after he was arrested for stealing jeans and a jacket from a Gap store.

The handcuffed prisoner kicked open the back door of a police cruiser and got away around 7:40 p.m. He was found in Brooklyn around 1:30 a.m. Friday without his handcuffs.
