Lawmakers Push to Expand Shabbos Meters to Midwood

BROOKLYN

Lawmakers are calling on the New York City transportation department to expand a recent Erev Shabbos meter rule change in Boro Park to Midwood as well.

Councilman David Greenfield, state Sen. Simcha Felder, and Assemblyman Dov Hikind wrote a joint letter to DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg to accommodate observant Jewish drivers by changing parking meter rules on Avenues J, M and P, Coney Island Avenue, Kings Highway, and New Utrecht Avenue.

Currently, drivers must pay the meters along these avenues until 7:00 p.m. on Friday evenings. With Shabbos beginning as early as 4:00 p.m. in the winter, this poses a problem for residents. Recently, the city modified meters on 13th and 18th Avenue to allow for prepayment of up to four hours. The letter asked that it be expanded to Midwood’s main roads.
