Taxi Industry: Uber Expansion Would Kill Existing Jobs
New York’s taxi industry says Uber’s proposal to expand outside of the New York City area threatens the jobs of dispatchers and others who work behind the scenes for cab companies around the state.
The Committee for Taxi Safety says in a report released Monday that more than 11,000 non-driver jobs are at risk if Uber is allowed to operate statewide.
Uber says it would employ thousands of drivers if allowed to expand into Buffalo, Syracuse, Rochester and other areas where the ride-hailing service is now prohibited from operating. That doesn’t include dispatchers, mechanics and office employees.
Lawmakers are expected to debate Uber’s expansion in January.
