ADL Condemns ‘America First’ Billboard

The Anti-Defamation League has condemned a billboard in Detroit that reads “America First Not Israel,” which it says is anti-Semitic.

The ADL’s Heidi Budaj charged that the large sign on 8 Mile Road in Detroit “raises an old anti-Semitic canard of dual loyalty, implying that Jews are not loyal to the country in which they live. Make no mistake that while many of the Jewish people in the United States support the state of Israel as a Jewish state, we are loyal Americans,” she said in an interview on Detroit’s WXYZ Fox News affiliate, The Jerusalem Post reported.

The billboard and those behind it represents an attempt to “drive a wedge between the American people and the state of Israel,” Budaj said.

The sign says it was “Paid for by Deir Yassin Remembered,” a New-York-based organization that has been posting similar signs throughout the country.

The website of Deir Yassin Remembered, Inc. lists its mailing address dually under the name of Daniel McGowan, an extreme environmental activist who has served time in prison for “eco-terrorism.”

Dair Yassin has been a rallying cry of Palestinians since the battle fought in the village of that name in April 1948 during Israel’s War of Independence.

Units of the Etzel (Irgun) and Lehi (Stern Group) undergrounds were accused of massacring dozens of Palestinian civilians in the village and forcing the survivors to flee.
