New York City has proposed new zoning rules that would require developers in certain parts of the city to set aside 25 percent of their units for affordable housing.
The first area to be considered in the mandatory inclusionary housing requirement would be East New York, Brooklyn, where significant new construction is scheduled.
Under the proposal released Monday, it would be one of 15 areas the city has earmarked for taller buildings to meet Mayor Bill de Blasio’s 10-year goal of adding 80,000 new affordable units.
Developers now are required to set aside affordable units only if they’re requesting assistance from the city. The zoning proposal will undergo at least six months of public review before a vote by the City Council.
