Mysterious 100-Foot Hole In Ground in Eastern Yerushalayim
A mysterious 100-foot-deep underground shaft has been discovered in the yard of an elderly woman in eastern Yerushalayim, police said on Monday.
The hole was dug a mere few yards from the Rockefeller Archaeological Museum, just outside the Old City walls.
Police arrived at the site on Nur al-Din Street after a tip from a neighbor and found ladders leading down into the shaft.
The owner told police that several months ago, people arrived at her home and told her they were from the municipality and needed to dig in the yard to fix a water leak. The y returned every day to continue the digging.
The police suspect that the unidentified diggers were seeking ancient artifacts and are investigating with the cooperation of the municipality and the Israel Antiquities Authority.
