Fire Union Accuses NYC Council of Lack Of Transparency

NEW YORK (AP) —

The union representing New York City firefighters filed a lawsuit accusing Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito of stonewalling its efforts to improve disability benefits for newly hireds.

The Uniformed Firefighters Association said in court papers filed Tuesday that the Council leadership refused to hold a hearing on a resolution in a timely fashion.

The union has been pushing for legislation that would improve benefits for firefighters hired after 2009.

Union head Steve Cassidy says the Council leadership has “unlawfully” refused to answer the union’s Freedom of Information Law requests.
