A contractor working on a Rochester road project drowned Monday morning after falling from a work boat into the Genesee River and becoming trapped in the current.

While rescue efforts were under way for the 35-year-old, a spokesman for utility RG&E says it restricted water flow by raising the gates on the company’s hydro dams upstream.

But the worker’s employer, The Pike Company, later issued a statement saying the employee had died. Pike Company President Rufus Judson called the accident unprecedented and said grief counseling is being offered on site.

The Genesee winds its way through Rochester via a series of falls and dams before emptying into Lake Ontario.
