Rockland Legislature Censures GOP for Blame-Jews Video
Rockland County’s legislature on Tuesday voted to support a national group’s condemnation of a video produced by the county Republican party that appeared to blame Orthodox Jews for local housing issues.
The Democrat-controlled legislature by a 13 to 3 margin passed a resolution, sponsored by Ilan Schoenberger, endorsing the Anti-Defamation League’s censure statement last week. The video was released in April in support of Republican Richard Vasquez’s campaign for county sheriff.
Imagery on the tape has incumbent Sheriff Louis Falco, a Democrat, surrounded by Orthodox Jews. A voiceover warns that Falco has refused to enforce illegal housing laws.
The county GOP has defended it as legitimate criticism. The state Republican party has not responded to several emails by Hamodia asking if the video reflects their views.
The resolution sparked a contentious debate in the chamber that lasted an hour and a half. Legislators Lon Hofstein, Joseph Meyers and Douglas Jobson voted against, while Christopher Carey, who leads the Republican minority, was absent.
