Etan Patz’s Dad Backs Prosecutor in DA Race

NEW YORK (AP) -

Etan Patz’s father issued a rare press statement Friday, endorsing the campaign of the lead prosecutor against the man accused of killing 6-year-old Etan in 1979.

Stan Patz expressed his support days after Joan Illuzzi (ill-EWE’-zee) became the Republican nominee for Staten Island district attorney. As a Manhattan assistant DA, she was the lead prosecutor in the murder trial surrounding Etan’s disappearance. It ended last month in a deadlocked jury.

Democratic foe Michael McMahon, a former congressman, pointed to the Patz case as proof Illuzzi hadn’t been a successful prosecutor.

“That is not how the Patz family feels!” Patz said. “…Because of [Illuzzi’s] efforts, we now know what happened to our child back on May 25th, 1979.”
