Bill Introduced to Create NYC Civil Justice Coordinator
The City Council is introducing legislation that would create New York City’s first civil justice coordinator.
The office would connect lawyers with people facing non-criminal issues. Those could include housing court, immigration, custody and other civil cases.
The legislation was introduced on Tuesday. It was a key component of City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito’s State of the City address earlier this year.
The office would have an annual budget of $2 million.
The new office would need approval from Mayor Bill de Blasio. De Blasio’s team has worked with the council on the project but the mayor has not yet committed to endorsing the plan.
If the post is created, de Blasio would pick the agency head.
