Report: Hamas Surrounded Shalit With Suicide Bombers
A Hamas official said that when kidnapped Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit was escorted to the prisoner exchange which freed him, he was surrounded by Hamas men wearing explosive belts.
The harrowing circumstances of Shalit’s release, after five years in Hamas captivity, were disclosed on Thursday by a senior official of the terrorist group, Abd al-Hakim Hanini, in an interview with Al Jazeera.
Hanini said that the order was given by then-commander of Hamas’ military wing, Ahmed Jabari, who was later killed by an Israeli air strike at the beginning of Operation Pillar of Defense in November 2012.
“Jabari told us that the military wing would decide — if there would be any violation of the conditions of the deal — Shalit would not return to Israel alive,” Hanini said.
