Apple Watch App Added Automatically in iPhone Update

(Chicago Tribune/TNS) —

IPhone owners are finding a surprise when they update their operating systems.

A new app for the Apple Watch appears on the first home screen, causing some annoyance while sparking a little backlash.

A Forbes blogger called the app “a nasty surprise.” Some iPhone owners have taken to social media to complain and seek advice on how to delete it. You can’t.

The Watch app, like Apple apps for stocks, weather, maps and health, can’t be removed from the phone. Some users call such apps “spam” or “bloatware.”

Apple released its seventh iOS update last week for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. The operating system also includes a new Activity app for viewing fitness data and achievements from Apple Watch.

Besides being a permanent addition, the watch app has caused consternation because it’s currently an advertisement for the device. The app has videos showcasing what the Apple Watch can do.

The Apple Watch will be available April 24.
