German Races Up Empire State Building Stairs in 10 Minutes
A German man on Wednesday night won the annual race up the Empire State Building’s stairs in 10 minutes and 16 seconds, while an Australian dashed up the 1,576 steps to the 86th-floor observatory in 12 1/2 minutes to win the women’s race.
German runner Christian Riedel was a first time winner while Suzy Walsham won for the sixth time.
The participants came from around the world and ran up the steps with staggered, seconds-apart start times to avoid a crush of people. The record is 9 minutes and 33 seconds, set by Australian Paul Crake in 2003.
