Yaalon To Travel To India

YERUSHALAYIM (Hamodia Staff) —

Israel and India drew another step closer on Thursday with the announcement that Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon will visit the subcontinent in mid-February.

It marks the first time a defense minister has gone to India. In 2012, India’s military chief of staff Gen. V.K. Singh visited Israel.

The two countries are jointly developing the Barak 8 air and missile defense system, aimed for deployment in both the Israel Navy and the Indian Defense Forces. In October, IAI conducted a successful trial of the system in which a simulated incoming hostile aircraft was intercepted.

The new defense system is currently being installed on Israeli Navy ships to protect them from a range of threats, in particular the Yakhont surface-to-sea guided missiles which Hizbollah has in its arsenal.

Yaalon is slated to meet with senior Indian counterparts, and to visit the Aero India defense trade exhibition in Bangalore from February 18 to 21.
