Deri Returns to Lead Shas

YERUSHALAYIM (Hamodia Staff) -

Shas leader Rabbi Aryeh Deri has returned to lead the party to the March 17 elections.

Deri resigned two weeks ago and had submitted his resignation to the Moetzet Chachmei HaTorah, the spiritual leadership of the Shas party, but it was rejected.

“I accept with humility and a bowed head the order of the Council of Torah Sages headed by council president Maran Rabbi Shalom Cohen,” said Rabbi Deri in his announcement on Monday.

“I was raised and educated all my life to adhere to the instructions of ouR Rabbanim, and therefore, after a difficult period in which I conducted a personal and familial accounting of myself and weighed various considerations, I decided that the Shas movement, the movement of Hagaon Harav Ovadia Yosef, z”l, and its hundreds of thousands of voters, is more important than any other consideration.”
