Bill Permits Medical Personnel to Travel During Bans
A state lawmaker who got stranded at a Buffalo-area nursing home during the epic November snowstorm wants to make it easier for medical personnel to get to their jobs when severe weather shuts down local roads.
Democrat Michael “Mickey” Kearns’s mother died during the four-day storm that eventually dumped 7 feet of snow on parts of the Buffalo area. Her body was at a nursing home in Lackawanna, one of the hardest-hit areas. The assemblyman says he had to spend three days at the facility, which was short-staffed because conditions had closed the roads.
Kearns wants the state to issue special designations on the licenses of medical personnel that would allow them to travel to their jobs when local emergencies force road closures.
