NYPD Increased Security During Sydney Siege

NEW YORK (AP) —

The NYPD says it increased security at Australian government and other high-profile sites around the city as the deadly hostage situation in Sydney unfolded.

The NYPD sent resources to the Australian Consulate General’s office and Lindt Chocolate stores in New York among other locations.

The 16-hour siege ended early Tuesday in the death of the gunman and two hostages. Police Chief William Bratton said Monday the extra security measures were in keeping with a policy during events that have a potential “ripple effect.”
