GM Recalling Chevrolet Caprice Police Patrol Vehicles

(Detroit Free Press/MCT) —

General Motors is recalling 7,601 police patrol vehicles that were built in Australia and imported to North America for problems relating to its transmission.

The automaker told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that it is recalling the 2011-13 Chevrolet Caprice PPV. All but three of the recalled cars are in the U.S.

“A driver may be able to shift the transmission out of park without depressing the brake pedal, move the shift lever between gears without pressing the shift lever lock button or have difficulty shifting between gears,” GM said.

The company said the vehicle’s display panel may show the wrong gear.

GM is shipping a service kit to dealers to fix the problem.

The company said it knew of one crash, no injuries and no deaths connected to the defect.
