Woman, 90, Becomes Citizen 86 Years After Arrival
A 90-year-old has been officially sworn in as a U.S. citizen — 86 years after she emigrated from Poland as a 3-year-old.
A clerical error on Anne Zajac’s parents’ citizenship application meant that she wasn’t a documented American citizen. But she didn’t find that out until last November, when she filed to receive her deceased husband’s social security benefits.
Her son turned to a local congressman, who helped locate her parents’ 1935 application and the error was corrected. On Thursday afternoon, a government official gave Zajac the oath of citizenship as her family looked on.
