NYC to Aid Legal Residents to Become Citizens
Permanent residents with green cards will be encouraged to apply for citizenship and be given the legal and financial help they need, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Wednesday.
Cities for Citizenship, an initiative launched by de Blasio, as well as the mayors of Los Angeles and Chicago, is aimed at increasing political participation among the 684,000 legal permanent residents p in the nation, de Blasio said in a press release.
Estimated benefits to the New York City economy add up to $4.1 billion over 10 years.
NYCitizenship will connect low- and moderate-income New Yorkers to free legal assistance for naturalization applications and will help overcome financial barriers to naturalization. The federal citizenship fee is currently more than $1,000.
