De Blasio to Seek Federal Security Clearance
He’s been leading the nation’s largest city for nine months but Mayor Bill de Blasio finally applied for federal security clearance.
De Blasio said Friday that he and members of his inner circle applied for the clearance “recently,” which he will need on order to be given certain classified security information.
Ex-Mayors Rudy Giuliani and Michael Bloomberg, along with Police Commissioner William Bratton, had the clearance, which requires extensive background checks.
The mayor did not offer an explanation as to why he had not previously applied. De Blasio’s staff downplayed the matter, saying the mayor could receive a waiver to view the classified material in an emergency situation.
