NY Detective Accused of Leaking Secret Documents

CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (AP) —

A Suffolk County detective stole confidential law enforcement documents and leaked them to a newspaper, endangering officers and investigations, the district attorney said Tuesday.

In January, District Attorney Thomas Spota alleged, the suspects in a string of armed robberies were reading in Newsday about police strategy in the case.

John Oliva, 48, who retired in June and was arrested Tuesday, waived his right to a grand jury and pleaded guilty to official misconduct.

The probe began when Newsday published a detailed report just as police were closing in on two suspects. They were quickly arrested.
