U.S. to Back Israel In U.N. Gaza Debate
Although the next steps in the political aftermath of Operation Protective Edge are as yet unclear, it is almost a certainty that the issue of Gaza’s future will be at the United Nations.
According to a government source in Yerushalayim, the U.S. will be standing beside Israel in the coming debates, especially in the U.N. Security Council, Ynet reported on Wednesday.
“Israel will have American backing if a decision is made in the Security Council,” said the source. Most especially, said the government official, the U.S. would be looking out for Israel’s security interests in the Gaza Strip. “The U.S. will be sure that the issue of demilitarization will be included,” he said.
U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said on Tuesday night that the blockade of the territory should come to an end and called for Gaza to be brought back under the rule of one legitimate Palestinian government that will adhere to PLO commitments.
