Lakewood Fire Chief Dies in Motorcycle Crash

LAKEWOOD (AP/Hamodia) —

A Lakewood fire chief on Sunday died in a motorcycle accident.

David “Rudy” Gaines, 52, was traveling in the right lane when he was cut off by a driver trying to change lanes who said he did not see the cyclist.

Gaines, who was chief of the Ridgeway Volunteer Fire Department, was greatly beloved among friends and co-workers, Police Sgt. Frank Work said.

“He was a longtime Lakewood resident who was always trying to help people here,” Work said. “He’s a name in Lakewood that is known for all the good reasons.”

The accident remains under investigation, said Work, who noted that while there was no probable cause to test the driver for drug or alcohol use, the driver agreed to a voluntary blood test at Ocean Medical Center in Brick.
