Court: Parents May Spank If Child Misbehaves

A father used reasonable force when he spanked his 8-year-old son for using profanity at an adult, ruled the state’s highest court, Newsday reported. Suffolk County social services alleged the father slapped by hand and then a belt. But the court said the spanking by hand “did not constitute excessive corporal punishment,” and there was insufficient evidence he hit with a belt.
