The Only Way Out
This is a time of great anxiety for our brethren in Eretz Yisrael.
As these words are being written, air raid sirens have been sounded in Yerushalayim, Tel Aviv, Haifa, and even Chadera, all the way in the north. The evil tentacles of the Arab terrorists in Gaza — via their short- and long-range missiles — have reached communities throughout Israel, sending frightened mothers and petrified children scurrying for cover.
The Israeli government has mobilized some 40,000 reservists, as its government faces a vexing quandary: how to respond.
There is no doubt that the IDF would be fully justified on moral grounds if it chooses to invade Gaza to try to topple its terrorist rulers. No civilized country would tolerate being at the receiving end of a barrage of rockets, and certainly not when the targets are large segments of their civilian population.
On the other hand, the Israeli government has been down this road before. It has repeatedly struck Hamas targets, eliminated its leaders, and only five years ago, during Operation Cast Lead, demolished much of the terror infrastructure.
Yet all that was accomplished was a temporary reduction in terror attacks, and this vicious viper repeatedly raised his head to shoot its deadly venom. In the past, even aggressive military tactics were unable to subdue Hamas, and there is little reason to believe that there is a viable, realistic military option that would finally eradicate Hamas’ potent threat to the lives of millions of Jews.
When asked by Hamodia about what the real way out of this crisis is, one noted expert on the Israeli military was straightforward:
“Rachamei Shamayim,” he said. “We need to daven.”
Kol Yisrael areivim zeh bazeh; all Jews around the world have a sacred obligation to pour out our hearts in tefillah, to beseech the Ribbono Shel Olam on behalf of acheinu bnei Yisrael in Eretz Yisrael, and to do all we can to create zechuyos with which to arouse Heavenly mercy on their behalf.
