Heavy Rain Causes Flash Floods, Outages in Catskills

ALBANY -

Within a day or two of the arrival of tens of thousands of Jewish campers to the Catskills, they had to deal with flash floods and rolling blackouts across large swaths of Sullivan County and eastern New York.

About 4,000 customers in the area were reported without power by late Wednesday afternoon, according to the New York State Electric and Gas Corp. Several roads and highways have been closed by flooding as severe thunderstorms rolled through, bringing torrential downpours, high winds and lightning.

Some local roads near Monticello were closed and water three feet deep forced evacuation of Main Street in Jeffersonville. Public Safety Commissioner Richard Martinkovic says 5 inches of rain or more had fallen as of 3 p.m., with storms expected to continue for another hour.
