NYC Council Asks State for Power on 25 Mph Limit
New York’s City Council on Wednesday asked the state Legislature for authority to lower the speed limit to 25 mph across the city.
The Council has passed a “home rule” measure on an issue that is decided by the state. Currently the speed limit on most non-highway city streets is 30mph.
The state Senate has signaled support for the measure. But passage is not certain before the legislative session ends this week.
The initiative is part of a “Vision Zero” push by Mayor Bill de Blasio and the Council to improve traffic safety and reduce pedestrian deaths.
