Success Applies To Open 14 New Charters

NEW YORK (AP) —

Success Academy Charter Schools applied for permits to open 14 additional schools in New York City. If approved by the SUNY Charter Schools Institute, the schools would open over the next two years. It’s expected to vote on the applications in October.

Success Academy is run by former city Councilwoman Eva Moskowitz. She says more than 14,400 families applied for fewer than 3,000 seats. Earlier this year, Mayor Bill de Blasio rescinded approval for space for three of her schools. Gov. Andrew Cuomo intervened and required the city to provide space for charters or pay rent for them elsewhere.
