NY Assembly Votes to Outlaw Ivory Sales
New York lawmakers on Wednesday endorsed a plan to criminalize the sale of ivory in an effort to protect elephants and rhinos.
The legislation would make exceptions for antiques or items containing ivory that are used for scientific or educational purposes. Similar legislation is pending in the state Senate.
The Wildlife Conservation Society cheered the passage of the bill in the Assembly, claiming that New York is the nation’s Number 1 importer of ivory.
