Jury Awards $172M in Verdict Against NYC

NEW YORK

A Bronx jury on Wednesday awarded $172 million to a girl who suffered brain damage while waiting for an ambulance after determining that paramedics could be held liable for waiting to transfer the girl immediately, The New York Times reported. Tiffany Applewhite was 12 when she went into shock in 1998 after a private nurse gave her a shot of steroids for an eye condition. The city said it would appeal.
