PLO Turns to 60 U.N. Bodies as Peace Talks Fade
As hopes for an extension of the Israel-Palestinian peace talks fade, the PLO’s central council decided on Sunday to follow through on its oft-repeated threat to pursue membership on some 60 United Nations bodies and international agreements, AFP reported.
The PLO-Hamas unity agreement sprung on the U.S. and Israel last week sealed the fate of the talks. Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu reiterated that Israel would not negotiate with a Palestinian government that includes Hamas, as the latter has refused international demands for it to recognize the state of Israel and renounce terrorism.
Nevertheless, Palestinian officials insist that the reconciliation would not affect negotiations with Israel, though Hamas officials have denied any change in their policy.
